It found that the number of children living amongst poverty in Minnesota has nearly doubled in the past decade, rising from 35,000 children to 68,000, or 5 percent of all children.Most relevant to southcentral Minnesota, it found that 21 percent of Blue Earth County children were living in poor neighborhoods, the secondhighest proportion in the state. That doesn mean Blue Earth County had a lot of children living in poverty themselves, only that a bigger percentage of children live in poorer neighborhoods.The research divided up counties by census tracts, which have about 4,000 people each.The study defined highpoverty neighborhoods as those tracts with a poverty rate of above 30 percent.
